This Wednesday, February 27, marks some watershed moments of liberty in United States History.

In 1922, the Supreme Court unanimously upheld the 19th amendment and a woman’s right to vote

In 1951, the 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified, limiting a U.S. President to two terms.

In 1991, U.S. President George H.W. Bush announced live on television that “Kuwait is liberated”.

On February 27, 2013, we will see another historic moment in our country. On February 27, Americans mark the 1400th day of our government operating without a budget. By enacting continuing resolution upon continuing resolution, the Democrat-led, Harry Reid Senate has failed the country, especially the poor and middle class.

The last time a budget passed was April 29, 2009 — almost four years. Every year except one, this President of the United States was derelict in his duty, under law, to present a budget on time. It happened again earlier this year earlier this month, when Obama failed to present a budget by the first Monday of February.

Yet this February 27, 2013 is again an opportunity for liberty. With Congress deliberating on whether or not to allow Obama’s planned sequestration cuts to go forth on March 1, they might take a moment of pause.

Is the current state of our Republic how it was meant to be when our Founding Fathers created it? Thomas Jefferson wisely observed, “I place economy among the first and most important of republican virtues, and public debt as the greatest of the dangers to be feared”.

We cannot go on like this.

We cannot go on mired in debt as a nation and expect to survive or thrive. We are more than $16 Trillion in national debt. More than $86 Trillion in unfunded liabilities. More than $1 Trillion a year in deficits. Isn’t it enough?

We are paralyzed by the machinations of an overly weak Congress and an overly powerful President.

Our Congress must allow Sequestration to proceed. The cuts will be hard on many Americans. But so will the consequences of not cutting our government. Republicans must say no to any compromise or change in cuts that will offer any less than the full value of the calculated sequestration cuts. They must also say no to any attempts to pair such cuts by “raising revenue through taxes”.

In 1922, women were finally liberated with a voice. Give a voice once again to the taxpayers of this country who are footing the bill for an extremely overextended government. And give a voice to the voiceless — the children and grandchildren of this nation who will be — yes, already are — unfairly burdened by the intemperance of a body politic.

In 1951, our government was liberated by putting limitations on the Executive Branch. Liberate our government once again by refusing to compromise with a President who has tried to unencumber himself from these cuts he himself first proposed, then later blamed Congress for, and then blamed Republicans and moved the goalposts in his deal. He has broken the trust of Americans and Congress, and Congress has the right and the duty to say “no more” to his overreaching tactics.

In 1991, we heard the message of liberation when George H.W. Bush announced “Kuwait is once more in the hands of the Kuwaitis, in control of their own destiny. We share in their joy, a joy tempered only by our compassion for their ordeal. Tonight the Kuwaiti flag once again flies over the capital of a free and sovereign nation and the American flag flies above our embassy”. Americans want to be in control of their own destiny as we have always been. But endless spending must be curbed. We want to stay as a free and sovereign nation too.

Yes, this Wednesday, February 27 can once again be a day of liberty. Americans can remind our Congress and our President that we have had enough: 1400 days without a budget is unacceptable.

On February 27, Americans can tell our Congress and our President that the looming sequestration cuts must move forward, as a first step toward reigning in our budget and spending.

Conservatives — lead the charge! Call upon Americans to remind our elected officials that we are the “land of the free and the home of the brave” and that they need to have the courage to do what is right. February 27 is a stark reminder of what is wrong. Let’s seek what is right: Pass a budget. Cut our budget. Be a nation of prosperity once again.
